Have you thought about getting a coach only to talk yourself out of it? It happens a lot...even to me. And I'm a coach!
We wonder: Can this coach really help me? Shouldn't I be able to figure this out myself? Can I really afford this right now?
What we're really asking is 'is it really going to be worth it?'
My perspective is undoubtedly biased, and yet here's my answer in two parts: working with a coach can be incredibly 'worth it' if you are ready.
Let's tackle the first part of my answer, where I'll shamelessly steal a portion a commencement address given by the late author David Foster Wallace: "There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, "Morning, boys, how's the water?" And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, "What the hell is water?"
When you're truly stuck, it's often because you're so immersed in the issue that you cannot gain distance from it. A good coach can help you see that you're in the water. That increased awareness is essential to create the distance to see things differently, and to identify and fully step into new ways of being. Let's tackle the second part of my answer, which honestly is the real crux of whether coaching will be worth it for you. My personal experience with coaching is that in some cases it was worth it and in some cases it wasn't. What's interesting is that the my perceived value of the coaching had nothing to do with the coach and everything to do with me. For coaching to be 'worth it', you have to be ready. That means being willing to go a level deeper, to tap into different parts of yourself that give you access to new ways of seeing, and--perhaps most importantly--to do something differently than you've been doing it. If all that sounds like too much right now, it might not be the right time for you to pursue coaching (and that's okay!). But if you are feeling ready, let me be the first to say that YES, coaching is worth it!*
